Human Separatists

  • Faction Name: Human Separatists

  • Location: Gilead Autonomous District, Hanar

  • Origin: Survivors and descendants of Gilead’s original human colony

  • Status: Autonomous enclave within Hanar’s confederation

Overview

The Human Separatists are a political and cultural faction based in the Gilead Autonomous District on Hanar. They descend from the original human settlers of Gilead who survived the Gelt invasion and the subsequent fusion bombardment that destroyed the planet’s primary city. Unlike the humans who chose to integrate with Hanar’s multi-species rebuilding effort, the separatists demanded—and received—a degree of autonomy from First Citizen Lattus Tishla’s government.

Beliefs and Goals

  • Preservation of Human Identity:
Separatists maintain a strong cultural and historical identity tied to the original Gilead settlers, including suspicion of alien influence (Gelt and otherwise).

  • Minimal Government Oversight:
Their agreement with Hanar’s central government allows them to operate largely independently, provided they do not interfere with broader planetary governance.

  • Distrust of the Compact:
Many separatists view the Compact of Humanity with hostility, blaming its bureaucracy and negligence for Gilead’s original fall to the Gelt.

  • Self-Defense Priority:
Separatists value local militias, minimal formal policing, and strong self-defense policies. They are wary of planetary enforcement agencies.

Key Figures

  • Nolan Rosc:
Former separatist militant who shot Tishla during the early rebuilding phase. Later became a critical intermediary between the separatists and Hanar’s government.

  • Shelly Parker:
De facto leader among more moderate separatists. Cousin to Lizzy Parker, the late wife of JT Austin of Amargosa. Known for negotiating temporary cooperation with Tishla during the turtloid crisis.

  • Nobu Katsumoto:
Leader of a rogue faction within the separatists. Advocated violent resistance to both Hanar’s government and alien settlers. Directly responsible for incidents that escalated tensions with the turtloids.

Major Events

  • Formation of the Gilead Autonomous District:
Following the liberation of Amargosa and Hanar, the separatists secured an agreement guaranteeing their internal autonomy under Hanar’s subsequent charters.

  • Turtloid First Contact Incident:
When the turtloids attempted to settle on Hanar, separatist tensions flared, culminating in Nobu Katsumoto’s faction killing and eating a turtloid clutchling. This ultimately led to the turtloids abandoning Hanar entirely.

  • Internal Division:
Moderate separatists like Shelly Parker sought peaceful coexistence, while extremists like Nobu Katsumoto pushed for continued isolation and violent resistance.

Relationship with Hanar’s Government

Tense but functional. While the separatists resent Tishla’s government, most recognize the necessity of working with her administration to ensure survival and self-rule. Tishla’s personal diplomacy—especially her restraint in the face of provocations—has helped prevent open conflict.

Legacy

The separatists represent the long-standing scars of the Gelt Incursion and the failures of interstellar government. Their survivalism, suspicion, and stubborn independence continue to shape Hanar’s evolving political landscape.
