Appears in After Amargosa
After the Liberation of Amargosa, Eric Yuwono returns to the Parker farm, now co-owned by JT Austin and Colonel Quan, only to find it occupied by a Gelt settler family—Clev, his wife Quma, and their son Devold. Though embittered by the recent war, Eric is pressed by Austin and Quan to accept the Gelt family’s presence, part of a broader Compact effort to peacefully resettle displaced Gelt civilians in the southern New Townships.
Initially suspicious and resentful, Eric struggles to cooperate with Devold, especially while working to repair equipment and rebuild farm infrastructure. Aiding them is Spikey, a sapient lycanth fascinated with human and Gelt technology. Tensions rise when Eric is forced to confront both cultural differences and lingering trauma from the occupation.
As the team works to reestablish the farm, wild lycanths—still a threat across the war-torn countryside—attack Devold, forcing Eric and Spikey to come to the boy’s rescue. The incident marks a turning point in Eric’s relationship with the Gelt settlers, particularly Devold, who saves Eric’s life during a second lycanth encounter by stabbing a wildling to death.
To help control the lycanth threat, UNDF (“Blue Helmets”) deploy genetically modified coyotes to the farm. While not fully trusted by Eric or JT Austin, the coyotes serve as an interim solution to protect settlers and livestock.
Eventually, Eric, Spikey, Quan, and the Gelt family relocate to the New Townships, a rough frontier where Gelt settlers build new farms alongside human survivors. Eric and Devold work together to rebuild fencing and infrastructure, surviving another wild lycanth attack that deepens their uneasy but growing bond. In the aftermath, Eric reluctantly begins to acknowledge the possibility of coexistence, vowing to take it one day at a time.
