Bridging the events of Checkmate and Royal Orders, it depicts a season-long affair between Ellie Nardino and JT Austin. Ellie’s primary goal, however, is to heal the rift between JT and Suicide as JT settles into civilian life. When the couple eventually parts on good terms, Ellie is forced to resume her role as Chapaan to settle a dispute between Gelt settlers and native sapient lycanths while JT has to hitch a ride when a supply run to a planetary survey team goes horribly wrong.
