Liberty

Liberty is a remote human colony world defined by its fiercely anti-authoritarian culture and rejection of centralized governance. Established during the early Interstellar Era by settlers seeking to escape galactic power structures, Liberty evolved into a “sovereign citizen world”—a loosely managed, decentralized society with minimal law enforcement and a strong emphasis on personal autonomy. The planet’s only significant settlement shares its name: Liberty, a dusty frontier town built near two rivers on a wide, semi-arid plain.

For much of its history, Liberty resisted alignment with the Compact, the Foundation, or any planetary bloc. However, its isolation left it vulnerable. Around 428–429 IE, the world fell under the control of the Cadre, a secretive and authoritarian faction that seized its key infrastructure and enforced brutal rule over the populace. A critical mine—rich in strategic minerals—became the center of Cadre activity and repression.

Role in Breaking Liberty:
During the events of Breaking Liberty, Ellie Nardino and Tishla arrive on Liberty escorting an amnesiac Baker ibn-Aziz, the exiled former President of the Compact. His presence sparks recognition in Camina Gee, his former lead Compact Marshal, who has been living on Liberty as part of the underground resistance.

Though Gee initially rallies the resistance upon recognizing Baker, she later departs with Ellie to rendezvous with Suicide and JT Austin, leaving the final operation in the hands of Mitsuko Windsor, who leads a detachment of trusted Household Guards. Mitsuko’s team successfully retakes the mine from the Cadre, dealing a fatal blow to their occupation and effectively liberating the planet.

Notable Features:

  • Settlement: Liberty (only major population center)

  • Mine: Strategic mineral resource; reclaimed during the uprising

  • Governance: Historically anarchic; occupied by the Cadre from ~428 to 437 IE

  • Current Status: Liberated during Breaking Liberty; political alignment under reconsideration

  • Kaalak – Reptilian prospector; killed during the mine uprising

  • Ellie Nardino & Tishla Austin – External operatives pivotal to Baker’s retrieval
