Planet: Amargosa
Location: Northern polar continent
Summary:
Deming is one of the principal cities on Amargosa, notable as a major industrial center specializing in the manufacture of heavy equipment, including agricultural and construction machinery critical to the colony’s survival. Alongside Arcanum, Deming played a vital role in supporting Amargosa’s agricultural and infrastructure sectors before the Gelt Incursion.
During the invasion of 429 IE, Deming was one of the first cities to come under full assault. According to reports relayed by Major Furlong from Southern Command, approximately half the city’s population managed to evacuate, while the remaining inhabitants were either killed or captured. Following the initial attack, the Warrior Caste conducted a systematic demolition of Deming’s infrastructure, crippling Amargosa’s industrial capacity as part of a broader strategy to force abandonment of the colony.
In the aftermath of the Liberation, Deming became a focal point for reconstruction efforts. Thanks to the partial survival of its industrial base, the city experienced one of the fastest recoveries among Amargosa’s devastated urban centers. Much of the rebuilding relied on nano-construction, and its surviving mech factories transitioned from producing combat drones to manufacturing civilian tractbots and reconstruction automatons. Deming’s revival also served as a prototype for broader planetary restoration efforts.
Although no major battles are depicted in The Children of Amargosa (Book), the destruction and partial recovery of Deming have a major influence on the resistance, refugee movement, and later economic rebuilding seen throughout the series. In “Wherever I May Roam,” Deming is also the site of Ellen Nardino’s reentry into civilian life, as she helps repurpose Gelt-origin mechs for peaceful use.
