I am about to attempt something I’ve only tried once before. I’m going to do audio!
I recently got a deal on eBay for a professional mic. After fiddling with the settings, I may be able to record my work into Audacity for upload to Audible. Of course, it will take work.
I’ve not done an Audible-quality recording before. The mic seems to handle the air conditioner noise in my office well enough. The rest I think might be dealt with in Audacity. Those are not my biggest challenges. It’s delivery.
I’ve done voice work before, contributing bits to an old comedy podcast called The Awful Show years ago. Doing comedy bits is acting. Reading from a book is… Different. I need to practice. I need to learn to make voices again on the fly.
So No Marigolds in the Promised Land is going to be the canary in the coal mine. I’ll practice by reading that. Hey, I got the first ten pages down already!
Once I know what I need to work on, I plan to do Road Rules, the Jim Winter road trip caper, for Clayborn Press. If I can do that, I should be able to read all of my work. However, I refuse to read Tishla. I want a female reader for that.
So looks like I’ll have to have lots of tea and honey handy. And my family will have to put up with lots of “Fuck! Start over!” shouts that I’ll have to edit out later.
Wish me luck.
