The Templars are the elite special operations force of the Foundation, created to serve as a unified, multi-branch special forces unit on par with the Compact military’s top-tier units. Unlike most military formations, the Templars do not report to a single branch of the Foundation’s defense structure. Instead, they may be activated by any of the Foundation’s three primary branches—military, security, or intelligence—depending on the nature of the mission.
The unit traces its origins to the Household Guards of Bonaparte, the royal protective detail. Recognizing the need for a flexible and elite force that could operate across the entire Foundation, Mitsuko Windsor, then consort to King Edward of Bonaparte, proposed their elevation to Foundation-wide status. The proposal was ratified by the Foundation Parliament, formalizing the Templars as an independent special operations force.
To participate more directly in Templar operations and avoid conflicts of interest, Mitsuko voluntarily relinquished her royal titles and standing within the Bonapartan monarchy. Her move was widely regarded as a principled stand and affirmed the Templars’ independence from any single world or political structure within the Foundation.
Following their elevation, Templar recruitment expanded to include elite operatives from across the Foundation’s core worlds and colonies. Members are known for their adaptability, tactical excellence, and unshakable loyalty. Templar missions include high-risk extractions, covert intelligence operations, anti-terror deployments, and protection of critical Foundation assets and personnel.
