Homeworld: Kaku V
Species Type: Sapient aquatic invertebrates
The cephelapods are an indigenous, sapient species native to the oceanic world of Kaku V. Resembling Terran squids or cuttlefish but capable of surviving on land for extended periods, cephelapods possess large, expressive yellow eyes, multiple tentacles, and paddle-like limbs for movement across the planet’s swampy surface. They communicate through a complex system of screeches, clicks, and low-frequency hums—sounds that resonate physically as well as audibly.
Highly intelligent, cephelapods demonstrated advanced social organization and strong territorial instincts. They originally warned human settlers to stay off dry land but were ignored, leading to escalating tensions and violence.
When Bonapartan forces intervened to remove unauthorized colonists, the cephelapods were initially reluctant to trust humans. They eventually reached an uneasy resolution after a tense hostage standoff, during which Lieutenant Mitsuko Yamato and her team successfully negotiated the evacuation of most human settlers. The cephelapods’ culture appears matriarchal, with “egg layers” holding authority akin to sovereign rulers in human terms.
