Starring Kurt Russell, 1982’s The Thing is actually not a remake of the 1951 movie set at a NORAD base in the Arctic. Set in Antarctica, this one is actually based on the second part of the novel that spawned the first movie.
The scarier half. The effects haven’t aged nearly as well, but this movie was always creepy in the same way Alien was. Even when you see the monster, you don’t really see it.
The novel always had a feeling like “these smart scientists have something up their sleeve” and lacked the consuming (double entendre) of this version of the movie.
