A squonk was a large rodent-like mammal native to Amargosa about the size of a domestic cat. They had been known to bite if stepped on, but were otherwise harmless. Ellie Nardino also said they ruined crops in rural areas if not controlled.
Squonks derive their name from a Genesis song about a forest creature so ugly they dissolve in their own tears from sadness. In-universe, this is likely one of several literary references readers may assume have been lost in time.
